Teachers cry foul over fund contribution

KUALA LUMPUR: A school in Batu Pahat has allegedly been forcing some of its teachers to fork out money for the school fund.

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said 50 teachers from the secondary school were issued a letter by the school head asking them to pay RM50 to the fund by the end of April.

These teachers, according to Lok, were given a salary increment recently following their promotion from Grade 41 to Grade 44.

“It is not right for schools to collect money from either teachers or parents in such a manner.

“It is important that school heads get the approval from the Education Ministry first,” Lok told reporters at a press conference yesterday.

She urged teachers from other schools who were caught in the same predicament to come forward with their complaints, adding that NUTP would submit a formal complaint regarding this matter to the Education Ministry next week.

Attempts were made to contact the principal at the school office but the principal was said to be attending meetings.

Lok said schools should also not ask teachers to pay exorbitant fees for other items such as the batik attire that teachers were required to wear during functions in schools.

On a related matter, Lok appealed to the Johor state education director to look into the administrative problems faced by a number of schools in that state.

Vincent Tan pledges RM600mil to charity

By THOMAS HUONG

KUALA LUMPUR: Billionaire Tan Sri Vincent Tan pledged to donate RM600mil in shares to his Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF) for charity, as part of his promise to give away half his wealth.

Tan, whose wealth is worth US$1.2bil (RM3.6bil) according to the Forbes magazine, is the founder and controlling shareholder of the Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) group of companies. He just retired.

In March last year, he had made the pledge, saying, “When you are wealthy, you can afford to give back to society.”

The RM600mil donation will be in the form of BCorp's 10-year, 5% ICULS (irredeemable convertible unsecured loan stocks) valued at RM200mil, and RM400mil worth of shares in U Mobile Communications Bhd which is expected to be listed on Bursa Malaysia in the third quarter of 2012.

BMF was founded a few years ago by the tycoon, and was formerly known as the Vincent Tan Chee Yioun Foundation.

"BMF should receive RM10mil annually from the ICULS, which pays 5% interest per year. Together with the future dividend income from U Mobile shares, the foundation will be well-funded to carry out charitable efforts," said Tan in his speech during the second Berjaya Founder's Day celebration held at Berjaya Times Square.

When he turned 60 two days ago, Tan announced he had relinquished his position as chairman of the group after earlier giving up the CEO post to his eldest son, Datuk Robin Tan.

"It is by no means an easy decision to make as Berjaya has been a part of my life. As I turned 60, I had to reset my priorities to seek rewards other than financial so I could devote more time for other causes," he said.

At Saturday's celebration, Tan also handed over donations worth RM11.6 million to 61 charitable bodies.

Tribute to Whitney Houston:

Whitney Houston telah mensajikan kita banyak lagu. Antaranya ialah “Greatest Love Of All”, 1986, – sesuai untuk kita guru:

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way

The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

Greatest Love Of All

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody's searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me
[Chorus:]
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I'll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
[Chorus]
And if, by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

MEMO DALAMAN - TUGAS YANG PERLU DISIAP MINGGU 7 (13.02.2012 - 17.02.2012)

MEMO DALAMAN - ENROLMEN PELAJAR JANUARI 2012
