BALIK PULAU: A factory supervisor pleaded guilty to two charges of showing an obscene sign in the direction of the Raja Permaisuri Agong and a police officer at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas here.
Leong Pei Koe, 28, who was charged under Section 294 (a) of the Penal Code (Act 674) for lewd activity in a public place, was sentenced to a month’s jail from the date of his arrest and fined RM6,000 under the first charge by a magistrate’s court.
He was also sentenced to a week’s jail from the date of arrest and fined RM2,000 under the second charge of showing an obscene gesture to ASP Mohd Fakhrudin Abd Hamid.
Both sentences were ordered to run concurrently. DPP Charanjit Singh prosecuted.
He was outside the arrival hall when he flashed the sign at the passing royal entourage.
One of Tuanku Hajah Haminah’s bodyguards, who saw the gesture, detained him and handed him over to the police.
Kata Pengetua: Lesson learned. Jika pegawai kerajaan: jika disabit kesalahan – boleh diambil tindakan tatatetrtib kerana “berkelakuan dengan sedemikan cara sehingga memburukkan atau mencemarkan nama perkhidmatan awam” [Perintah Am, Bab D, perkara 4(1)(d)].
A varied, balanced diet is the cornerstone of healthy living for everyone, yet healthy eating can sometimes mean different things depending on your gender. While there are some foods we should all be eating more of, men and women also have their own set of dietary requirements as well as their own unique health concerns. Here are 10 foods all men should eat.
Tomatoes are possibly one of the best "superfoods" around, and the popular fruit has particular benefits for men. Studies have suggested that the lycopene found in tomatoes may reduce risk of colorectal cancer, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease; the leading cause of death in men. Research has also shown that men who frequently eat foods rich in lycopene may drastically reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer.
Blueberries are another fruit that have been linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer, thanks to their high levels of proanthocyanidins. However, blueberries' positive benefits for men don't stop there, as studies have also suggested that blueberries may be effective in reducing risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes andage-related memory loss; a condition more prevalent in men than women.
Snacking on nuts is great for heart health and good skin. However, Brazil nuts are particularly beneficial for men as they are packed with selenium; a powerful antioxidant which studies have suggested can boost sperm health and motility. Furthermore, selenium is also great for lowering "bad" cholesterol levels, preventing blood clots and lifting your mood.
Broccoli - along with other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and sprouts - contains a strong cancer-fighting chemical, sulphoraphane, which research has suggested may reduce men's risk of developing bladder cancer (a cancer more commonly affecting women than men), prostate cancer and colorectal cancer.
Oysters are the highest natural source of zinc; an essential requirement for men's fertility and sexual health. Zinc not only helps to maintain healthy testosterone levels in men, but it is essential for healthy sperm production. On top of this, zinc deficiency may be responsible for hair loss in men, so an increased intake may benefit men's appearance as well as health.
Food for men 6: Whole grains
Whole grains are great for our health thanks to their high levels of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Most whole grains, including brown rice and oats, are particularly rich in B vitamins, which are good for general wellbeing and can also help alleviate depression. Individual B vitamins can also benefit male health in various ways. Studies have suggested that folate (vitamin B9) can keep sperm healthy, whilebiotin (B7) may help hair loss. Silica, also present in whole grains, could also help with healthy hair growth.
Food for men 7: Eggs
For men suffering from hair loss, eggs may also provide the perfect solution. Eggs are an excellent source of protein, which is essential for hair growth, as well as being rich in biotin (vitamin B7). Egg yolks are also a good source of iron, which some studies have suggested can alleviate hair loss, which can be caused by anaemia.
Food for men 8: Pomegranate juice
Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and research has suggested that drinking the juice of this "superfood" can help lower cholesterol- which can be high in many men as young as their 20s - and prevent hypertension. A study has also found that drinking just one 8oz glass of pomegranate juice a day could dramatically slow down the progress of prostate cancer.
Food for men 9: Garlic
Garlic is well known for boosting heart health, and a study on the effects of garlic consumption on males has shown that regularly eating garlic could help lower men's cholesterol levels. Furthermore, research findings published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute have suggested that regularly eating garlic and onions could help lower men's risk of developing prostate cancer.
Food for men 10: Salmon
Salmon is not only a great source of protein, but it is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help address many of men's most common health complaints. Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to lowered levels of "bad" cholesterol and can also reduce risk of many illnesses, including heart disease, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and depression

KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) is pressing for the salary scale of all district education officers (PPD) to be upgraded from the current 48 to 52.
Its deputy president Jisin Nyud said the STU had proposed this scale adjustment to the teacher’s congress meeting which was held in Kedah last year.
“All PPD and principals serving under the scale 48 should be upgraded to 52.
“This was our proposal to the congress last year and we will continue to fight for this upgrading this year,” he said at the STU Chinese New Year gathering here yesterday.
It is learnt that some of the PPDs, especially those in bigger town areas were serving under scale 52 while their fellow colleagues in the outskirts were still serving under scale 48.
He said the Education Ministry had also given its green light to the proposal by the STU for all theafternoon supervisors to be upgraded to scale 48 from the current 44.
He added that the STU had also brought to the attention of the ministry regarding the teacher’s burden in having to do clerical work.
“This is due to the implementation of school-based assessment where teachers had to key in all the details.
“This had added the burden of the teachers who also have to teach at the same time.
“Some of these teachers even have to sacrifice their family time to do the clerical work at home,” he added.
Metro, 04.02.2013: TASEK GELUGOR: Kira-kira 50 pelajar Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Permatang Tok Jaya dekat sini, mengalami muntah dan cirit-birit akibat keracunan, malam semalam.
Butternut squash — like many other yellow/orange fruit and vegetables — is packed with carotenoids such as alpha-carotene and beta-carotene. While carotenes should be included in everybody's diet for optimum health, they may prove essential to women's health as a high-carotenoid diet has been linked to lowered risks of bothbreast and ovarian cancer.
Female-friendly food 2: Tomatoes
Another vibrant carotenoid beneficial for women's health is lycopene, a pigment found in tomatoes. Studies have suggested that lycopene may be effective inpreventing breast cancer. Furthermore, there has been considerable evidence to suggest that the powerful antioxidant can help reduce risk of heart disease — the leading cause of death in women in the US, Australia, England and Wales.
Female-friendly food 3: Flax Seeds
Flax seeds are a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and have been linked to reduced risk of breast cancer and heart disease. The seeds' anti-inflammatory properties are also good for preventing arthritis, while their digestive benefits can help irritable bowel syndrome; two painful conditions which are more prevalent in women than men.
Female-friendly food 4: Salmon
Salmon has a multitude of positive health benefits for women. Not only is it rich in iron — which is integral to the diets of premenopausal women — but it is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, known for their mood-enhancing effects. Studies have suggested that omega-3 can help beat depression (something that affects twice as many women as men) and prevent mood swings, while salmon can also boost babies' intelligence when eaten during pregnancy.
Female-friendly food 5: Cranberries
Various studies have suggested strong links between consuming cranberries and reduced risks of breast cancer and heart disease. However, the most notorious benefit of cranberries is their ability to prevent and cure urinary tract infectionssuch as cystitis, which is eight times more likely to occur in women than men. One study suggests that drinking two glasses of cranberry juice a day can prevent the symptoms of common UTIs in women.
Spinach is rich in many different vitamins and minerals, but one thing that makes it great for women is its high content of magnesium. Research has shown that magnesium may be beneficial in reducing many of the physical symptoms of PMSwhich plague women, including reduction of swelling, breast tenderness, bloatingand weight gain.
Figs are a great health food, containing many vital minerals and vitamins as well as contributing to your daily portions of fruit and veg. Two minerals found in figs that are particularly beneficial to women's health are iron, which is often deficient in menstruating women, and calcium, which is important for post-menopausal women, who are more prone to osteoporosis.
Milk is a great source of calcium, which is extremely beneficial to women's health, particularly when combined with vitamin D (found in some varieties of milk and many fortified milk products). Consumption of the combined nutrients is not only good forwarding off osteoporosis, but a study has suggested that a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D could ease, or even prevent, symptoms of PMS.
Oats are literally packed with health-boosting nutrients, many of which have great impacts on female health. Oats are not only great for heart health, digestion andblood pressure levels (with hypertension affecting many women over 50), but they contain vitamin B6, which can help prevent PMS and mood swings, and folic acid, which is important for women to consume before and during pregnancy toprevent birth defects in babies.
While all nuts are great for our health, walnuts have many great individual benefits for women. A study has recently found that walnuts, which are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytosterols, may help to reduce women's risk of developing breast cancer, while their high omega-3 content may also help bone health, arthritis pain and depression. Walnuts also contain many nutrients essential for female health, such as calcium, magnesium and folic acid.

In the news -
PETALING JAYA: Besides harsh criticism, netizens have reacted to a video of an NGO leader snatching the microphone away from a university student by creating comical Internet memes, songs and even dance remix versions of the video.
Users ridiculed the leader for repeating the word “Listen” seven times to stop the student from speaking and for comparing the issues raised, such as free education and street protests, to the “problems” faced by animals.
“Even sharks have problems.
“Have you eaten shark fin before? Have you seen how people throw the shark back into the sea to die. See how humans are more greedy than sharks?” asked the speaker, Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M)president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin in the 24-minute video.
Controversial singer Namewee was among those who came up with a parody of the video, while another user posted a catchy dance remix version called “Listen! Listen! When I Speak, Listen!”
The original video, which was uploaded on YouTube last week, shows a student, who wanted to be known only as Bawani KS being interrupted by Sharifah, who was a guest speaker at the forum held in Universiti Utara Malaysia on Dec 8.
Sharifah told Bawani to leave the country if she was not happy in Malaysia.
“Don't compare Malaysia with other countries. If you compare, what are you doing in Malaysia?
“Go to Cuba, Argentina, Libya, go everywhere. Because, you know what? All the students in this hall are happy with whatever the government does for them,” Sharifah told the student in the video.
When contacted, Bawani, 27, who is currently pursuing a law degree, said the speakers had promised a “Q&A” session after the forum but did not allow more than two questions.
“I did not agree with some of the views expressed by the speakers and wanted to share my own. However, she cut me off while I was speaking, and said that I was being rude,” she said.
The video even attracted the attention of Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah who called Bawani.
“Even if the speaker did not agree with Bawani, she should not have spoken down to her in such a condescending and patronising way,” said Saifuddin when contacted.
Kata Pengetua:
Biar pelajar itu sendiri come to her own conclusion.
2. Katakan sekolah kita mengelolakan ceramah tersebut. Penceramah buat begitu kepada pelajar kita. Apakah yang patut kita buat? Kalau saya, saya akan "potong penceramah" dan take over.

GEORGE TOWN: A businessman has lodged a police report against a teacher for cutting his son's hair without permission.
S. Shanmugam, 39, who lodged the report on Friday, claimed that the teacher cut his son Niruman Kumar's hair short without warning.
He said that although it was not the first time Niruman had had his hair cut in school for being too long, he was previously given notice.
“We were issued warning letters in the past and given seven days to cut his hair.”
Niruman, 15, claimed that he had obtained permission from a disciplinary teacher to keep his hair long for religious reasons.
“However, another teacher picked 11 other students and myself randomly and cut our hair,” Niruman said at Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer's service centre here yesterday.
Rayer said he would write to the state education department tomorrow to look into the matter.
Penang Education Department director Ahmad Tarmizi Kamaruddincould not be reached for comment.
Kata Pengetua
Saya amat khuatir, finally, semua kita (ahli masyakat) rugi, kerana guru wouldn’t care less!
Organise your working life
If your work day often leaves you feeling stressed and overwhelmed, it is time to calm things down by getting more organised. Firstly, make sure you arrive a few minutes early for work to give you time to organise your tasks for the day and get mentally prepared. Secondly, organise your space by clearing away any clutter and streamlining your workspace (this includes clearing your desk and deleting old emails). Finally, make a list of everything that you need to do that day in order of priority. If you can, try taking care of the more difficult things first to help take a weight off your mind.
Brighten up your desk
Research has shown that workers who have input into the design of their workspace are up to 40 per cent happier than those who do not. While you may not have the authority (or inclination) to decorate or rearrange your whole office or work place, try brightening up your individual area by purchasing some nice stationery, putting up a photo of a happy occasion, a funny calendar or small piece of artwork, or getting a nice plant for your desk. A happy environment makes a happy worker!
Wear a mood-boosting outfit
While many of us are required to wear a uniform or adhere to a dress code for work, if you do have more freedom to dress as you wish, try opting for clothes or accessories that boost your mood. Whether you opt for a piece of jewellery that reminds you of a special memory, a colourful bag to brighten up your day, that confidence-boosting outfit, or even your favourite underwear beneath it all, adding something special to your worn-in work attire can really brighten your day and make you feel happy within yourself.
Add some variety to your working day
They say variety is the spice of life, and this is never truer than when it comes to your working day. Following the same routine day in, day out can quickly cause boredom and dissatisfaction to set in, so try making every day a little different in any way you can. Try doing routine tasks in a different order, talking to someone new or taking a different route to work (perhaps even using a different mode of transport, such as cycling, if you can). If you really can’t shake up your work day itself, instead try organising something fun and different to do on your lunch break every so often.
Get active in your lunch break
If your working day is getting you down, try giving yourself an instant happiness boost by squeezing some exercise into your lunch break. Exercise is good for boosting self-esteem and letting off stress, and it also releases chemicals in the brain such as endorphins and anandamide which can boost your mood and leave you feeling great. If you have shower facilities at work you could go for a lunchtime run. Alternatively, a brisk walk around the shops will get your heart rate up without working up a sweat.
Snack on ‘happy foods’
Got a tough day ahead? Then make sure you pack some healthy snacks for work to keep your spirits up and boost your mood. Certain nutrients in food can affect how we feel, so try stocking up on well-known happiness-inducing foods such as walnuts (for Omega-3 fatty acids), bananas (for serotonin-producing tryptophan and relaxing magnesium) and wholegrains (for mood-boosting B vitamins). Also, stick to low-GI foods for slow-release energy, as low blood sugar levels can lead to depression and fatigue.
Be positive and friendly towards your colleagues
Regardless of how you feel, try to adopt a positive and friendly attitude when talking to colleagues – yes, even the ones who get on your nerves! Try to resolve any conflicts, avoid office gossip, and treat everyone as you would like to be treated, and you may find that you get the same in return. Furthermore, research shows that the act of smiling can actually make you feel happier, so try to paste on a smile however you really feel – it may just boost your mood and your workplace happiness.
Appreciate the fact that you have a job
If you know that your job isn’t the one for you but are stuck with it for now, try to make the best of what you’ve got. The job may not be permanent, but going to it every day with no sense of purpose (other than to get through to the end of the day) will quickly get you down. Try to identify a sense of purpose or positives of doing the job, whether it is noting that the position is getting you nearer to your dream job, helping others in some way, or giving you an opportunity to build on certain skills. If you think positive then your mood will naturally improve.
