Teachers spared janitor duty

PUTRAJAYA: Teachers do not have to take part in a mass clean-up programme in schools on Saturday to mark Teacher’s Day on May 16, the Education Ministry said.
It said students could instead volunteer to help clean areas such as the staff room, teachers’ eating area within the canteen or their desks in the classroom.
The secretary of the ministry’s main organising committee for the Teacher’s Day celebrations Mohd Anuar Abdul Hamid stressed that the mass clean-up or gotong-royong perdana was on a voluntary basis.
“We would not want to burden our teachers with more work,” he said in an interview in conjunction with the Teacher’s Day celebrations.
Mohd Anuar who is with the ministry’s day school management division, was commenting on an earlier report where teachers expressed unhappiness at being asked to take part in a mass clean-up programme.
Some teachers said the cleaning work did not reflect their professionalism, went beyond their core business of teaching, and did not give a good impression of teachers.
Mohd Anuar said the mass clean-up had been discussed during a recent meeting between the ministry and other agencies on programmes to be held for Teacher’s Day.
“We are introducing two new programmes for the celebration this year, with one being the mass clean-up and the other being the Yaasin recitation at all state mosques,” he said.
It was decided that a mass clean-up could be held at the same time and day which is this Saturday from 8.30am, in all 10,000 schools as a means for students to show their appreciation to teachers, he added.
Other activities being held this year are the presentation of various awards including the Tokoh Guru, leadership and innovation; education forums and exhibition and the launching of books.
Mohd Anuar said the national Teacher’s Day celebrations were being held in Pahang this year and would be launched at the Universiti Malaysia Pahang campus by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday.
