KUALA KANGSAR: A total of 24,053 teachers who have completed the required duration of service will be considered for promotion between June 1 and Dec 31, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
He said this would involve 8,222 teachers with Bachelor's degree, and 15,831 others with diploma.
"They can check their names at the Education Ministry's website starting today," he said when launching the 41st National Teacher's Day celebration here today.
He said in line with the government's effort to improve the Teaching Service Scheme, the minimum allocation for the time-based promotion would be maintained as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on March 8.
Under the scheme, teachers on Grade DG41 need only to complete eight years of service to be promoted to Grade DG44, eight years for those on Grade DG44 to move to DG48, six years for Grade DG48 to move to DG52 and only three years for those on Grade DG52 to be promoted to DG54, he said.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said teachers with diploma on Grade DGA29 need also to complete eight years to be promoted to Grade DGA32, another eight years to move to DGA34 and another five years to DGA38.
He said following the announcement made by the prime minister, 390 teachers had been promoted to Grade DG54, DG52 (676), DG48 (3,938), DG44 (19,805), DGA38 (399), DGA34 (2,639) and DGA32 (9,519).
He said the promotion for principals on Grade DG48 to DG52 and senior assistant teachers on Grade DG44 to DG48 had been implemented by the ministry.
"So far, 854 principals have been promoted from Grade DG48 to DG52 and 4,270 senior assistant teachers have been promoted from Grade DG44 to DG48," he said.
Muhyiddin said the promotion involved the existing principals and senior assistant teachers who were appointed before or on Dec 31, 2011 and those who had been acting as principals and senior assistant teachers before or on Dec 31, 2010.
The promotion took effect on Jan 1, 2012.
Muhyiddin said the promotion for 430 other principals on Grade DG48 to DG52, and 2,655 senior assistant teachers on Grade DG44 to DG48 would be ratified in stages from June 2012 when they fulfilled the requirement.
"The government has also allocated RM934 million to implement the promotion for officers in the education service. The allocation proves the government's commitment in giving recognising the efforts undertaken by teachers to develop quality human capital," he said.
Besides, he said the government was also committed in achieving the target of having 60 per cent of graduate teachers in primary schools and 90 per cent in secondary schools nationwide by 2015.
He said the teacher's graduating programme was also running smoothly with 69.6 per cent of 66,124 teachers had accepted the offer to pursue their tertiary studies at various institutions of higher learning.
